Romancing the Dark Side Review:A fun but short story that reminds me why I fell in love with the series!
In this mini-installment of the series, Cady and Lon attempt to test his son Jupe's newly discovered knack of persuasion on Cady's business partner and friend, Kar Yee. What was supposed to be a fun and relaxing afternoon on the sea soon turns into an unexpected adventure filled with plenty of mystery and mermaids. Ms. Bennett doesn't fail to impress you with her "knack" for playful banter between her characters and a beautifully crafted magical world.
This novella is the perfect addition to the series and while I would recommend new readers to start with book one because you don't want to miss a single chapter, Leashing the Tempest can easily be followed with the essential details provided by the author. Arcadia Bell was my favorite urban fantasy heroine of 2012 and she never fails to leave her mark with her determination, sense of humor and compassion. I'm a huge fan of flawed characters but what draws me to Cady and the series is how ordinary they seem, even with their supernatural charms. The close knit family bond Lon, Cady and Jupe share grows stronger with each book and adds a fun dynamic to the story.
I wouldn't be a true fan if I didn't talk a little about Cady's sexy boyfriend (who in my mind can only be seen as long-time actor crush Johnny Depp!) Lon. It's refreshing to see a leading lady fall for a handsome, older man who's far from the genres typical alpha heroes but still has the charisma, smarts and sex appeal...kudos to Cady for snagging him up!
Leashing the Tempest is a fun and satisfying addition to this already stellar series. With plenty of mystery, magic and even more humor, this action-packed novella is the icing on the cake for Arcadia Bell fans and a fabulous introduction to urban fantasy readers who will be hooked! My thanks to Jenn Bennett for sharing this awesome story while we anxiously await the release of Binding the Shadows.
