Hunger - Karen E. Taylor Romancing the Dark Side Review:

A fascinating look into the world of a female vampire!

In Hunger we are introduced to Dierdre, a lonely vampiress who keeps to herself, lives as a fashion designer by day and indulges her hunger by night. To get her blood "fix" she frequents the club Ballroom Romance, owned by Max Hunter, an old lover turned friend and the only person who knows her true identity and keeps her secret. Dierdre despises being a vampire but looks to Max to provide her with the occasional male client to feed upon.

Not one to kill her victims, Dierdre drinks just enough to satiate her thirst. Things get a little complicated for Deirdre when the man she feeds from leaves the Ballroom and turns up dead. Now she's a suspect and must answer to the sexy Detective Mitch Greer, who isn't easily persuaded when she denies her involvement. Diedre's quiet world is soon turned upside down when she must work with Mitch to prove her innocence and guard her heart from the man who inspires a lust in her, well hidden for centuries.

Dierdre is a riveting character. She believes she is the only of her kind and is quite inexperienced in a vampire's lifestyle. Although centuries old, Dierdre is very vulnerable and has a hard time accepting her immortality, she sees it as a curse. She's not your typical heroine but grows into her skin and eventually shows her confidence and strength, becoming a great female lead. Dierdre is hard to connect with at the start of the book but changes your impression of her by the end of Hunger.

Many might say the romance between Deirdre and Mitch is not believable but I truly enjoyed seeing their relationship develop. We have two characters who are loners and have experienced heartache, come together for a second shot at love. Mitch is a likeable hero who is Alpha but also has a sensitive side. I love that it's not all about sex with these two, they truly have a deep connection. That being said, I would have loved some more steamy scenes, I felt the author rushed through the romance at times to get back to the action. There are also some great supporting characters, such as Max which you can't help loving; he's got major charm and you don't know who's side he's on but you can't dislike him!

Hunger is a compilation of the first two books in the series, Blood Secrets and Bitter Blood (which takes place two years after Blood Secrets). Hunger is a well written vampire novel that takes you into Dierdre's dramatic world. The book starts off a little slow with plenty of details on Dierdre's every day life but then takes a turn into a suspenseful and action-packed story. Tons of intrigue, scorned villains, a dash of humor and a heartwarming romance make Hunger an appealing read that will leave vampire lovers hungry for more!
